Kept From the Hour of Testing

'Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.'

Revelation 3:10

In my previous post I alluded to this verse and stated that this was not a pre-tribulational promise of rapture, but a promise to those who were faithful. I would like to take a deeper look at this, to further explain what I meant.

This verse is similar to a verse found in John's gospel. The context is the period of time right after the Passover meal, just before Jesus went to Gethsemane, where He was betrayed by Judas.

Jesus has washed the disciples feet, and given them some final words of consolation and encouragement. He was about to face the cross, and ultimately leave this earth, returning to His Father. He assures the disciples that they will not be alone, but He will send them the Holy Spirit. They are also warned that persecution is to be expected. Jesus did not want them to caught by surprise when it arrived, and He does not want us to be either.

John 17 records Jesus' prayer for His disciples, and for all who would come to believe in Him as well. There is one part of this prayer that can shed some light on the verse quoted above.

"I do not ask you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one."

John 17:15

The word "keep" in this passage as well as the passage pertaining to the philadelphian Church is the same word meaning to guard or to watch over, to preserve. We often think of this word as to prevent something from happening. For example in this verse, to prevent believers from experiencing Satan's attacks. But we know this cannot be true, as Christians throughout the ages have experienced Satan's attacks in various forms. The Bible tells us that we will (1Peter 5:8-9, James 4:7). Jesus is praying that the Father would watch over and preserve us through the attacks of Satan, and many can attest to the faithfulness of God when trials and testing come.

Likewise, dispensationalism teaches that the Church will be raptured before the great tribulation. They see a promise of escape in the promise to keep faithful believers from the hour of testing to come upon the whole earth.  But as I previously stated, the word "keep" means to watch over, to guard, to preserve. To be consistent with the previous passage, we must conclude that Jesus will watch over and preserve us through tribulation, yes, even the great tribulation as well. 

It is interesting to note that in His prayer He did not ask that the disciples be removed from the earth. Why? Because they had a mission to reach the lost, to disciple all of the nations. If they would have been quickly "raptured" out when Jesus ascended how would any of us have heard and believed the good news of salvation? So why should we be raptured out early? Are we better than they were? No, we, just like them, have the same call and mission to bring the gospel to the lost. We must finish what they began. They were promised persecution and we share that same promise, and just like the first disciples, we too have the promise of God's faithfulness to watch over, guard, and preserve us, as we faithfully carry out the task He has given us.

We might face suffering, and even death because of who we serve, but He is faithful to bring us safely home.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Matthew 28:19-20 NASB 

Perseverance of the Saints

7. It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.

8. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain.

9. If anyone has an ear, let him hear.

10. If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and faith of the saints. 

Revelation 13:7-10 NASB 

"And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.

Revelation 12:11 NASB 

The context of these passages (Rev 12:1-13:18) describe the 42 month period known as the "great tribulation." Chapter 12 tells of Satan being cast down to earth, and in a great rage he pursues the Jews to destroy them. We are also informed that he makes war with those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus (Rev13:17). In other words Christians.

Chapter 13 describes how Satan seeks to  accomplish this. It is through a figure referred to as the beast, also known as the Antichrist. This individual is given authority by Satan for this purpose. Contrary to popular teaching, followers of Jesus will be on the earth, and will face this persecution. This is abundantly shown in scripture. Many are "secure" in the belief that we won't be here to experience this, but instead of resting in a false comfort, we need to reconcile with reality and prepare ourselves for what is to come. 

When these dark days come upon the earth Christians will need endurance. In the above verses we read of perseverance in the midst of persecution. The temptation to cave in, to renounce our faith will be overwhelming. Yet to give up for the sake of some momentary safety will cost us in the end.

11. "And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."

12. Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

Revelation 14:11-12 NASB 

Again we see the necessity of perseverance or endurance, and faith. The faith mentioned here goes beyond mental assent to Biblical facts. This faith is better defined as loyalty. To take the mark is to give allegiance to the beast, and ultimately to the dragon or Satan who is the power behind the beast. To be faithful even unto death is the way to overcome Satan.

9. When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;

10. and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "How long O Lord, holy and true, will you refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell upon the earth?"

11. And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also.

Revelation 6:9-11 NASB 

Here we read of martyrs who were put to death because of their faithfulness to the word of God, and the testimony that they maintained, even under the most severe conditions. The word martyr means witness. To die for your faith in Christ is the ultimate testimony to the world. It is sealed in blood.

In the old covenant sacrificial system the blood of the sacrifice was poured out at the base of the altar (Leviticus 4:7). These martyrs placed their very lives upon the altar of sacrifice, and their souls were poured out in death. This is the picture we see described here.

In Revelation 7:9-17 John beheld a great multitude of people from every nationality standing before the throne and the Lamb. They also were wearing white robes and carrying palm branches. When asked who they were, and where the had come from, John had no answer. 

14. I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15. "For this reason, they are before the throne of God; and they serve Him day and  night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. 

16. "They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any heat.

17. "for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes."

Revelation 7:14-17 NASB

Earlier we saw the souls of the martyrs under the altar. Now we see the full number of martyrs standing before Jesus, apparently now in their glorified bodies. They no longer cry out for God to avenge them. Now they cry out in worship, "Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb." (Rev 7:10). Their conflict is over and they are safely in the presence of Jesus, their robes have been washed in His blood, they maintained their testimony, and they did not cling to their lives when faced with death. 

To be sure, there will be those who are alive and remain at Christ's second coming (1 Thess 4:17), but primarily, to come out of the great tribulation will be through death. 

This is how we overcome Satan with his wrath against those who follow Jesus. It will be essential that we resolve now to be steadfast in the face of persecution. The scriptures are filled with warnings against deception, lawlessness, and persecution in the last days. These things will cause many to fall away from the faith. A great apostasy from the faith is foretold as a warning to us. We must be strong, we must steadfast, we must persevere. 

2. And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, holding harps of God. 

3. And they sang the song of Moses, the bond servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and marvelous are Your works, O Lord God the Almighty; righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations!

4. "Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For you alone are holy; for ALL THE NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP BEFORE YOU, FOR YOUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS HAVE BEEN REVEALED. "

Revelation 15:2-4 NASB

Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgement was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshipped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Revelation 20:4

To be victorious demands endurance. I do not mean that we pick ourselves up by the boot straps and exert all of our self effort, because we really are insufficient in and of ourselves. We read of a Church with little power, but who kept the word of Jesus and did not deny Him. They were given an open door, and kept from the hour of testing that is to come. This is not a pre-tribulational promise of rapure, but God's promise to those who are faithful. We read Jesus' words that He will be with us always, even to the end of the age (see Rev 3:7-12, Matt 28:20 John 17:15). We are called to overcome numerous times throughout scripture. Endurance is vital if we are to come out of this world victorious over everything that Satan throws at us, especially in Earth's final days. 

  

Why the End Times (What Jesus Taught part 9)

So far I have primarily used the Old Testament to show what Moses and the prophets said about the last days. There is more that I will return to in future posts, but for this one I would like to look at the words of Jesus. What did He have to say about the time of the end?

In what has come to be known as the Olivet discourse Jesus sets down a timeline of events that give us a pretty good picture of what to look for as the events leading up to His second coming begin to unfold. This teaching can be found in Matthew 24 -25, Mark 13, and Luke 21. I encourage everyone to read and study what Jesus had to say on this topic. I will quote verses out of these chapters to show how Jesus gave a chronological order to these events; an order that closely follows what is also found in many of the prophecies found in the book of Revelation, and backed up by numerous Old Testament passages.

In response to the disciples question, "When will these things happen, and what will be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?" (Matt 25:3) Jesus answers,

"See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ, and will mislead many."'

Matthew 24:4-5

Jesus first and foremost warns against deception. We live in an age where deception is prevalent, and is only going to get worse. As the events of the last days arrive they will bring with them a level deception that the world has not yet seen. Jesus warns,

"For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance " 

Matthew 24:24-25 NASB

Paul warns of increased deception in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12. He states that we must not let anyone decieve us concerning the return of Christ. He then proceeds to tell of an individual who will come and sit in the temple and exalts himself as God. This individual whom we can refer to as the Antichrist will come empowered by Satan with all power, signs, and false wonders, misleading multitudes. This will be a dangerous time, and the love of truth will be vital, as God Himself will send a deluding influence on those who refuse to believe the truth.

Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, "Come."

I looked, and behold a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

Revelation 6:1-2 NASB

There have always been individuals who claim to be a Messiah, and some who actually claim to be Jesus. But there is an individual who will come at some point and confirm a seven year covenant or treaty between Israel and her neighbors ( Daniel 9:26-27). This is a covenant he never intends to keep. His goal is to deceive them so that he can destroy them. His rise to power will be shrouded in deception, and tragically the world will go after him (Rev 13:3-4).

"You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See to it that you are not frightened, for these things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes."

Matthew 24:6-7 NASB

Jesus now states that wars and threats of war will preceed His return. As a result of these conflicts famines in various places will occur. 

In discussions over end times events many people look at the historical wars as what Jesus is talking about. They go back to the Civil war,  the World wars, Viet Nam, Desert Storm etc. and mention how it's just getting worse, Jesus must be coming soon, it's all in the Bible. But Jesus is focusing on specific actions that occur perhaps just prior to, and within the first few years of the seven year covenant that Israel has fallen for. These events are foretold in scripture.

When He broke the second seal, I heard the second living creatures saying "Come." And another, a red horse, went out, and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him. 

When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, "Come"  I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of wheat for a denarius, and do not damage the oil and the wine."

Revelation 6:3-6 NASB

When Jesus speaks of "nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom", He is referencing a passage found in Isaiah 19 concerning conflicts within Egypt in the final days. Ultimately Egypt will fall to a cruel taskmaster, a mighty king who will rule over them (Isaiah 19:1-4).

Daniel prophesies that the "king of the North", another name for the Antichrist, will attack Egypt, in his attempt at unifying ten nations under his control. This will lead to three major North African nations coming under his power (Daniel 7:23-24, 11:25-31, 43). 

We also read in Daniel 8:1-27 of a conflict in the Middle East between the Persian empire (modern day Iran), and Greece. Actually the word that has been translated as "Greece" is Javan, an ancient people descended from Noah who settled in the coastal region of the Mediterranean, into what is now modern day Turkey. 

Commentators often place this battle in history, between Persia and Alexander the great. After the death of Alexander the great, his kingdom was divided up between four generals, and the  fighting over territory among them led to the eventual rise of Antiochus Epiphanes. He is actually considered to be a type or foreshadowing of the Antichrist. However, there are verses that cannot be ignored. Twice in this chapter we read that this vision pertains to the time of the end ( Daniel 8:17-19, 26). 

There are those who place this entire vision into the time of the last days, others view it as starting with the fall of the Persian empire to Greece and then telescoping into the future with the coming of the Antichrist. I have seen arguments for both viewpoints. It is best to not be too dogmatic either way, and keep our eyes open as things unfold. This vision definitely has the arrival of the Antichrist in mind.

The conflicts that take place as the Antichrist rises to power will definitely have an effect on the world from an economic standpoint. War causes hardships including food shortages, and factor in the amount of oil that comes out of the Middle East, it is not to hard to see that the world would definitely be impacted in a negative way. 

As the world rushes towards these days we will see an uptick in natural disasters as well. Here Jesus mentions earthquakes. In Luke 21:25 He mentions fear caused by "the roaring of the sea and waves."  Revelation 11:19, and 16:21 mention a devastating hailstorm accompanied by a major earthquake. However these two events coincide with the timing of Christ's second coming. Jesus, in the verses we have just been looking at, tells us that these are merely the beginnings of the "birth pains."  All of this is leading to what is referred to as the great tribulation, a three and one half year period of intense persecution and misery at the hands of the Antichrist, who will be ultimately revealed at an event known as "the abomination of desolation."

"Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end shall come. Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! But pray that your flight will not be in winter, or on a Sabbath. For then there will be a great tribulation, such as not occured since the beginning of the world until now, not ever will."

"But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people; and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled."

Luke 21:20-24 NASB

The breaking of the fourth and fifth seals follow this order.

When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, Come." I looked, and behold, an ashen horse, and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Revelation 6:7-11 NASB

There is a lot to unpack in these verses. Jesus gives us the sign to watch for that signals the start of the great tribulation. This event known as the abomination that causes desolation is foretold by Daniel in four places. 

In Daniel 8:9-14 we read of the "little horn" that magnifies itself to be equal with God and stops the sacrifices and tramples the sanctuary. 

Likewise in Daniel 9:27 we read of this same individual who makes a seven year covenant with many, but at the midpoint of this time period he stops the sacrifices, desecrates the temple and makes Jerusalem desolate.

The third mention is found in Daniel 11:31-37 The "king of the North" will become enraged, invade Israel and place the abomination of desolation. He will exalt himself above every god, and blaspheme against God himself. He will prosper in all of the things he does until the "indignation" is finished.

And finally in Daniel 12:11 we read that once the sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. A period of time 30 days longer than three and one half years.

It is interesting to note that Jesus mentions a great falling away in conjunction with the abomination of desolation. This is confirmed by the apostle Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5. Paul is addressing a concern that some of the believers there had voiced. Apparently they were under the assumption that the day of the Lord had already come. It is important that we understand Paul's reply, because many get it wrong. 

Paul adresses "the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him." (2 Thess 2:1)

This gathering is what is often referred to as the rapture. It is often taught that this event will occur first, then seven years later Jesus returns. But Paul refutes that teaching with his answer in these verses. If we read this section we see that two things must happen before Jesus comes and gathers us.

1. A great falling away.

2. The abomination that causes desolation.

Paul is adamant. He states,

Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called God or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things?

2 Thessalonians 2:3-5 NASB 

Paul is saying that there will be two unmistakable events that believers will see before Jesus returns and gathers them. Just like Jesus said, we who are alive in the time of the end will see the day when there is a great falling away; a day when brother betrays brother during a time of intense tribulation that follows the revelation of the Antichrist, who will desecrate the future temple in Jerusalem. The second coming of Christ, and our gathering to Him occur at one time, not two, at the end of the tribulation, as we will see.

Jesus gives another sign to watch for in Luke 21:20-24. The armies of the Antichrist will surround Jerusalem as he begins his invasion that starts the great tribulation. Jesus tells us that these will be days of vengeance, referring back to Leviticus 26:25 where we read of the vengeance against the broken covenant. The Gentile armies will trample the city until their time is fulfilled. 

In Revelation 11:2 we read that the Gentiles will trample the holy city for 42 months, that is three and one half years. Likewise Daniel shows us that the tribulation would be for a "time, times, and half a time." (Daniel 12:7) Again, three and one half years. This will be a time like no other in history. 

Why do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in childbirth? And why have all faces turned pale? Alas! For that day is great, there is none like it; it is the time of Jacob's distress , but he will be saved from it.

Jeremiah 30:6-7 NASB

"Now at that time Michael, the great Prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occured since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued."

Daniel 12:1 NASB

Jeremiah's ministry as a prophet covered the time period just before, and during the Babylonian captivity. Daniel's covered the time of the captivity and into the fall of Babylon to the Medo-Persian empire. These prophets experienced the hardship and cruelty of Babylon, yet what they foretold was coming in the last days would exceed that. What Jesus tells us about these coming days is in agreement. They will be days unlike anything that the world has ever seen, and will never see again for the absolute horror and destruction that will occur.

The Antichrist will make war against the saints and overcome them for a time, times, and half a time (Daniel 7:21-25). When the power of the holy people is shattered, all of this will be over ( Daniel 12:7). 

Zechariah foretells of the day when two thirds of the people in the land will perish, but one third will remain and be refined and tested. They will be the ones who will call on the Lord their God at Christ's second coming (Zechariah 13:8-9).

"Then if any one says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or,' There He is,' do not believe him. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect."

Matthew 24:23-24 NASB

Along with all of its cruelty, this period of time will be filled with deception, as so called prophets and false messiahs seek to decieve. One individual is mentioned in Revelation 13:11-17. He is referred to as the false prophet (Rev 19:20). He will look like a "lamb" but speak as a "dragon". It is interesting to note that Islamic end times belief is that Isa (their version of Jesus) will return to destroy the Christians and the Jews. He will subject himself to the Mahdi ( their Messiah) to accomplish these things. It is a little uncanny to read this and compare it to what is found in Biblical prophecy.

The false prophet will cause all to worship the beast. He will perform great signs and wonders to decieve all who dwell on the earth. He will make an image of the beast, and causes it to speak. It is this individual who implements the "mark of the beast" so that it will be impossible to buy or sell without giving your allegiance to this kingdom.  

Jesus warns us however, not to be deceived by these things. His coming will be highly visible, and obvious to all (Matt 24:27).

"But immediately after the tribulation of those days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory. And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other." 

Matthew 24:28-31 NASB

"There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and in the earth dismay among the nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Luke 21:25-28 NASB

I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts it's unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. Then the kings of the earth and the great men and commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

Revelation 6:12-17 NASB 

Immediately preceding the second coming of Jesus there will be cosmic signs in the heavens. What Jesus is describing here is foretold by Isaiah,

Behold the day of the LORD is coming, cruel, with fury and burning anger, to make the land a desolation; and He will exterminate its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shed its light. Thus I will punish the world for its evil.

Isaiah 13:9-11 NASB

And Joel records this,

"I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire, and columns of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD will be delivered; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as the LORD has said, even among the survivors whom the LORD calls."

Joel 2:28-32 NASB

There will be no missing this event. When these signs begin,  men's hearts will be filled with dread, for they know that they will face the wrath of Jesus, the Lamb. Yet we also read that as these final events take place believers are encouraged to look up, because their redemption is now coming. 

It is now, as He splits the sky, that the elect are gathered from one end of the sky to the other. When he comes, Israel will call upon Him, they now recognize Him, and mourn. This repentance will result in their salvation as a nation (Zechariah 12:10-11, 13:1). It is also the day that the beast and his armies will be destroyed at Armageddon (Revelation 19:11-21).

Then He told them a parable; "Behold the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is now near. So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place."

Luke 21:29-32 NASB 

Jesus has given us a timeline of events that lead up to His second coming. He does this so that we can be aware of what is coming and be prepared. While He tells us that no man knows the day or hour of His return (Matthew 24:26), we still have signposts, so to speak, that let us know where we are at as these things unfold. 

Jesus wants us watching and ready. This does not mean we are to merely study these things,  and sit back and watch for these events to occur. No, Jesus goes on to exhort us to action. To be prepared for His second coming involves action on our part (Matthew 24:42-46).

Matthew 25 records two parables, followed by the separation of the "sheep and goats."  In the first parable we have ten virgins, five wise, and five foolish. They took lamps with them, and went out to meet the bridegroom. The bridegroom was delaying his coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. Suddenly they were awakened with a shout. The bridegroom was coming!  Now the five wise virgins had extra oil for their lamps, so they were able to go out and meet the bridegroom. The foolish virgins rushed back to find more oil. They were not ready, and missed out, with devastating consequences (Matthew 25:1-13). 

The lesson here is that of spiritual readiness. Always be ready and right with God. His coming may not come for a while, and the opportunity for complacency is a dangerous reality. We dare not let it set in, but we must always be "on fire" for our Lord Jesus Christ.

The second parable concerns a man who was going on a journey. He entrusted his slaves with his possessions, expecting them to use them wisely, so that when he returned he would have an increase. Each one was given a different amount, and he only  expected an increase in proportion to what they had been given. Two of the servants obeyed, and when the master returned he was overjoyed by their faithfulness. The third slave, the one who had received the smallest amount, did not use the little he had. In fact, he buried it in the ground, and just left it. Again, the consequences were fatal to this disobedient slave ( Matthew 25:14-30).

Likewise, we are expected to use the gifts and abilities that God has given us to advance His kingdom on this earth, while we are waiting for Christ's return, when His Kingdom will be consummated. 

When Jesus returns He will gather the nations and separate them according to their deeds. Did they feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, welcome the stranger? These acts of kindness reflect our commitment to Jesus. We either love Him, and that love will express itself in loving the "least of these", or we don't. A lack of love shown to the needy around us is only a reflection of our lack of love and commitment to Christ and His cause (Matthew 25:31-46). 

Ultimately this sheep and goat judgement will be about the treatment of the Jews during their darkest night (Joel 3:1-3). If we can't love the needy and marginalized around us today, do we think that we will brave the dangers of the tribulation to reach out and love others then? Remember Jesus plainly says that the love of most will grow cold.

During the tribulation the Jews will be scattered throughout the nations. Will the Church step up and hide them, feed them, clothe them, minister to them, lead them to Jesus, their coming Messiah? I know many believe that the Church will be gone, safe in heaven, when these days come. But we have been joined at the hip with them, so to speak. We have been grafted in to the vine, enriched by the same root. (Romans 11:19-32). We were once alienated from God's covenants and chosen people, but now through Christ we have been brought in (Ephesians 2:11-20). We have one final mission during the hardest time the world will ever see. We must help our brethren come into their salvation. Yes, we will face persecution. Multitudes of believers will be martyred during these days (Revelation 7:9-17, 20:4), but this gospel of the kingdom must be procaimed in all the world, and then the end will come ( Matthew 24:14). Will we rise up and be the people that we have been called to be? 

Why the End Times (The New Covenant part 5)

"So shall it be when all of these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind in all nations where the LORD your God has banished you, and you return to the LORD your God and obey Him with all your heart and soul according to all that I command you today, you and your sons; then the LORD your God will restore you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. If your outcasts are at the ends of the earth, from there the LORD your God will gather you and from there He will bring you back. The LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.

Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.

Deuteronomy 30:1-6 NASB 

Israel has had a long history of departure from following the LORD God who has chosen and covenanted with them. The LORD Himself told Moses that this would indeed happen as they prospered in the land they were about to possess (Deuteronomy 31:15-22).

While the covenant God made with Abraham was an irrevocable covenant, the Mosaic covenant placed stipulations upon their ability to remain in the land. If they would depart from following the commandments of the LORD, He would scatter them as a nation. If they would then turn back to Him in repentance they would be restored back to the land promised to them. 

In the above passage we find that God would do something that would enable them to walk faithfully in obedience to Him. The law itself could not ensure their faithfulness, they needed a change of heart, just like anyone of us do. 

In a passage speaking of the return of Christ to bring Judgement upon an evil world we find this,

"A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob," declares the LORD. "As for Me, this is My covenant with them," says the LORD: "My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring's offspring," says the LORD, "From now and forever." 

Isaiah 59:20-21 NASB

It is interesting to note that this passage begins with an indictment against the nation of Israel, followed by a confession of their guilt, leading to the LORD Himself coming to bring vengeance to the wicked, and restoration to the repentant. At the end of this passage, which also foretells of the millennial age to come,  we read that all of the nation will be righteous, and they will inhabit the land forever, planted by God Himself (Isaiah 59:1-60:22).

It is the "New Covenant" that provides the answer for man's rebellious tendency. All of us who have entered into this covenant through the new birth can attest to this fact. We have found that our lives have been transformed from slavery to sin, to a life of freedom to serve Christ in faithfulness.

We read of this New Covenant being made with the House of Israel and the house of Judah. Both kingdoms of the divided nation are mentioned here. 

"Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their father's in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the LORD, "For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." 

Jeremiah 31:31-34 NASB

This is the answer to the dilemma posed by the stipulations in the Mosaic Covenant. God has made an irrevocable covenant concerning Israel and the land on the one hand, but has decreed that they must faithfully obey Him to remain in it. 

Many people of Jewish descent have entered into this new covenant ever since the day of penecost two thousand years ago. And multitudes of gentile believers have been grafted in as well through their trust in Jesus Christ. However Israel as a nation has not entered as a whole. That day is yet to come, but make no mistake, it will.

"This says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar, the LORD of hosts is His name: if this fixed order departs from before Me," declares the LORD, Then the offspring of Israel will also cease from being a nation before Me forever." Thus says the LORD, "If the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth searched out below, then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done," declares the LORD.

Jeremiah 31:35-37 NASB

I think that many Christians fail to look at this section in its entirety. We see the new heart and the law written upon it, and that is true, and vital to our salvation, yet we fail to see that in this covenant God is once again pledging that Israel will always be His chosen people. He will not cast them away. He will allow the curse of the law to bring them to the end of themselves, where they will cry out to Him in repentance. At this point as we read in Isaiah 59:20, "A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob," declares the LORD.

And then in the next chapter we read again of the New Covenant.

"Behold, I will gather them out of all the lands to which I have driven them in My anger, in My wrath and in great indignation; and I will bring them back to this place and make them dwell in safety. They shall be My people, and I will be their God; and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me 

 I will rejoice over them to do them good, and will faithfully plant them in this land with all My heart and with all My soul. For thus says the LORD, 'Just as I brought all this disaster on this people, so I am going to bring on them all the good that I am promising them.'"

Jeremiah 32:37-42 NASB

As previously stated, Israel has faced periods of apostasy, driven out of the land, yet brought back into it years later. However, we have yet to see the day when they, as a nation, have one heart and purpose to serve the LORD their God with all their heart and soul. When that day comes we see the fulfillment of the New Covenant for them as God's chosen people. They will be regathered one final time, brought back to the land originally sworn to Abraham, and settled there never to be uprooted again. 

The New Covenant is the capstone so to speak, of the previous covenants we have looked at. It brings to pass all that God has promised Israel. It confirms the covenant with Abraham, brings resolution to the blessings and curses of the law, and ushers in the Davidic kingdom. Look at Jeremiah 33:14-17, where we read that at the time of Israel's salvation, a righteous Branch of David will set up His kingdom, the ultimate fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant.

Finally I would like to look at a passage found in Ezekiel 36. A chapter where the desolation of the land of Israel is described, a desolation that occurs because of God's wrath towards His people on account of their rebellion against Him. I recommend you read the chapter in its entirety, as I will only quote part of it here. 

Then the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Son of man, when the house of Israel was living in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and their deeds; their way before Me was like the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity. Therefore I poured out My wrath on them for the blood which they had shed on the land, because they had defiled it with their idols. Also I scattered them among the nations and they were dispersed throughout the lands. According to their ways and their deeds I judged them. When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, 'These are the people of the LORD; yet they have come out of His land.' 

"But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went."

Ezekiel 36:16-21 NASB 

God is a faithful and just God. He will not allow sin to go unchecked. There are consequences for sin. Sin among God's people is especially devastating, as it brings a reproach to the name of God as well. When the lost around us see sin and hypocrisy among those who profess to serve Christ it reflects upon Him. God will not tolerated that, judgement does begin in the house of the Lord (1 Peter 4:17). 

Again, a dilemma. Does God destroy the nation on account of their sin? If He does, He is not faithful to the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, yet as a holy God He must judge sin.

The context of the surrounding chapters in Ezekiel is the tribulation of the last days, culminating in the return of Christ to defeat "Gog" (the antichrist) at the Battle of Armageddon (see Ezekiel 38-39). At this point Israel has gone through an invasion that sparks the great tribulation, a time of unequaled distress that will come upon the world. Yet through this terrible event Israel will be brought to a place of repentance when their Messiah (Jesus) comes to deliver them from their enemies. The prophecy of Ezekiel 36 is set to occur at this point in time.

"Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the LORD GOD, "It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD," declares the LORD GOD, when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight. For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land. Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God."'"

Ezekiel 36:22-28 NASB

God will be vindicated through His deliverance of Israel from her enemies in the last days. All the nations who have come against Israel, will know that He is the LORD when Israel turns back to Him, and he brings them back into their land. His faithfulness to His covenant will be obvious to all. No one will be able to question Him from this point on. Israel will now live in peace, in obedience to their God forever, as a witness to the world around them.

Why the End Times? (The Davidic Covenant part 4)

At the birth of John the Baptist, his father Zacharias, uttered this prophetic word,

"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David His servant -as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old-SALVATION FROM OUR ENEMIES, AND FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US; to show mercy toward our fathers and to remember His holy covenant, the oath which He swore to Abraham our father, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days. And you child will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS; to give to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God. With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, to guide our feet into the way of peace."

Luke 1:67-79 NASB

Around one thousand years previously, God made a covenant with a king named David. It starts with the ultimate establishment of Israel in their land, and the final overthrow of their enemies.

"I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and not be removed again; and the wicked will not waste them anymore as formerly, even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies."

1 Chronicles 17:9-10 NASB

Up to this point Israel had  experienced times of conflict with various enemies, but had yet to experience removal from the land.

By the time of Zacharias, the Assyrian captivity, followed by the Babylonian captivity, had occured, and now although they were back in their land, they were subject to the Roman empire. So this is looking to a time yet future.

"Moreover I tell you that the LORD will build a house for you. When your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be his father and he shall be My son;and I will not take My loving kindness away from Him, as I took it from him who was before you. But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever."

1 Chronicles 17:10-14 NASB

The day is coming when Israel will be delivered from all who seek to destroy them, and be established in their own land in peace and security. The LORD will be their God, and they will be His people. One is coming to set up His kingdom in Jerusalem and reign over them forever. He is the Son of David, Jesus the Messiah.

Matthew's gospel begins by tracing the genealogy from David to Jesus, establishing the fact that Jesus is indeed Israel's Messiah (Matthew 1:1-17).

At the birth of Jesus the angels announced that a savior, Christ (Messiah) the Lord had been born in the city of David (Luke 2:10-11).

Peter, in his sermon on the day of Pentecost, went back to the Psalms to show that David prophetically spoke of the day that Jesus would rise from the dead and be exalted, the fulfillment of the covenant that God had made with him (Acts 2:22-36).

As Jesus was about to ascend back into heaven His disciples asked if this was now the time that He would restore the kingdom back to Israel. I have often heard various Bible teachers pass off these disciples as ignorant, as not really understanding Jesus true mission. However their question only shows that a major prophetic theme, found in the writings of the scriptures that they would have been thoroughly steeped in, was in fact the restoration of the nation, by an individual who would be their Messiah. It's interesting that Jesus did not rebuke them, or correct their "error",  He told them that it was not for them to know the "when", they must be His witnesses in the "now" (Acts 1:6-8).

One could go on, the scriptures are filled with passages proving that Jesus Christ is the one who will put down evil and reign in righteousness forever. 

I will finish this post with a fabulous passage found in Ezekiel 37, the "dry bones" chapter. The context is the regathering of Israel back into the land after being scattered among the nations. The two kingdoms will be united as one, and the nation as a whole will be born again.

"My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd; and they will walk in My ordinances and keep My statutes and observe them. They will live in the land that I gave to Jacob My servant, in which your fathers lived; and they will live on it, they and their sons, and their son's sons, forever; and David My servant will be their prince forever. I will make a covenant with them, and I will place them and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever. My dwelling place also will be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people. And the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever."

Ezekiel 37:24-28 NASB

Why the End Times (The Blessings and Curses of the Law. part 3)

We have seen the choosing of Abraham as the one through whom the ultimate seed (Jesus) would come. God made a covenant with him, and through him, to his son Isaac, and then Jacob to multiply their descendants after them, and give them what is known as the "promised land."

 

The next covenant that needs to be looked at is the covenant God made with Israel at Sinai, the Mosaic covenant. 

'Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel."

Exodus 19:5-6 NASB 

This covenant unlike the Abrahamic covenant required obedience from Israel if they were to be blessed by God. What I would like to focus on in this post is how Israel's faithfulness to the LORD would affect their ability to remain in the land. All of this is spelled out in a couple sections that pertain to the blessings for obedience, and the curses for disobedience. 

According to these passages Israel's ability to remain in the land promised to them in the covenant made with Abraham was contingent upon their faithfulness to the covenant God made with them at Sinai. Here is what many perceive to be a dilemma. If the land promise was an irrevocable promise, how can Israel's obedience or disobedience effect this promise?

Is God unfaithful?

There are several passages of scripture that show how this works out. Leviticus 26:1-13, and Deuteronomy 28:1-14 contain blessings that Israel can expect if they as a nation walk in obedience to the LORD.  And the consequences for disobedience can be found in Leviticus 26:24-39, and Deuteronomy 28:15-68. 

To briefly sum it up, if Israel turns from the LORD and falls into idolatry they will face various disasters and ultimately be driven from their land and dispersed among the nations.  Their ability to remain in the land hinges upon their obedience. Yet as we read on we find that if they repent of their sin God will forgive them, and bring them back.

"If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me-I also was acting in hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies-or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that they make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land."

Leviticus 26:40-42 NASB

Deuteronomy 30:1-5 NASB

God's covenant with Abraham remains in spite of the fact that Israel turns away from Him. The giving of the Law ( the Old Covenant) does not negate the covenant with Abraham (Galatians 3:16-18). They might not be able to remain in the land, but because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the land is still theirs. His judgement is not only punitive, it is the  means to bring them to the end of themselves, to the point of repentance. Then, the LORD will restore them to their land again.

We have seen this play out through history. The Assyrian empire took away the northern ten tribes of Israel followed by the Babylonian captivity of the southern kingdom of Judah years later. Yet we read Daniel's prayer of confession in Daniel 9:1-19, and then read of their release from Babylon. Israel was dispersed by the Roman government in 70 AD and for almost two thousand years scattered among the nations where they suffered times of immense persecution. Yet in more recent times they have returned to the land where they remain today. The Bible foretells of one more time of desolation that is to come. This is time of tribulation will be the event that brings Israel as a nation to the point of repentance. Read what is prophecied in Deuteronomy 4:25-31

"When you become the father of children and children's children and have remained long in the land, and acted corruptly, and make an idol  in the form of anything, and do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD your God so as to provoke Him to anger, I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will surely perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to possess it. You shall not live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed. The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD drives you. There you will serve gods the work of man's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul. When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.

For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you not destroy you not forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them."

Why the End Times? (The Abrahamic Covenant part 2)

To understand why, and how the events of the last days will play out we need to go back to the beginning. Last post we briefly looked at the fall of man and the resulting consequences that followed. People were now looking for one to come and reverse the curse (see Genesis 5:28-29).

God had foretold of one who would come and restore all things, and now this was being put into place one piece at a time.

Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your fathers house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and  you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

Genesis 12:1-3 NASB

God chose a man through whom he would bring the Messiah, the one who would reverse the curse and destroy the serpent. He called Abram out of his country, and away from his family to become a mighty nation in a land that he would give him and his descendants.

The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him.

Genesis 12:7 NASB 

The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see, I will give it to you forever. I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you."

Genesis 13:14-17 NASB

Now it needs to be mentioned that Abram, who was 75 when he departed from Haran, was childless. And Sarai, his wife, was barren. Imaging how Abram must have felt. A promise like this would be an incredible thing. 

In Genesis 15 we read of the actual covenant that the LORD made with Abram. The LORD took Abram outside and asked him to look at the stars and try to number them, and nd then told him that that was how numerous his descendants would be. Abram believed the LORD, and it was counted to him as righteousness (Gen 15:1-6).

The LORD had Abram bring a heifer, a female goat, a ram, and a turtle dove and pigeon. He cut the animals in half and laid them out opposit from each other. The birds he left whole. At sundown Abram fell into a deep sleep. Then what appeared as a smoking oven and flaming torch passed in between the animals (Gen 15:7-17).

In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite."

Genesis 15:18-21 NASB 

This covenant was made by God, to Abram, without stipulations on Abram's part. The LORD Himself walked through the pieces of the slain animals in making this covenant. What He was signifying by this act was that if He did not indeed fulfill this covenant by giving this land to the descendants  of Abram as an eternal possession, then may what happened to these animals happen to Him. Bear in mind that Abram did not pass between these animals, he was in a deep slumber. God has pledged this land to Abram's descendants. This chapter alone absolutely refutes the idea of "replacement theology", the teaching that God has rejected Israel, and now these promises are symbolically applied to the Church. If this false teaching is true, then a major part of end times prophecy makes no sense at all, and leaves a huge portion of Christians in the dark on the topic of the last days.

In Chapter 17, Abram is now ninety-nine years old. The LORD appeared again to him and reaffirmed this covenant. Again, Abram, whose name has been changed to Abraham, is promised to become a mighty nation, and the land was promised to him and his descendants after him as an eternal possession. God would be their God, and they would be His people (Gen 17:1-8). 

It is also at this time God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, as the sign of the coven between them. Any disobedient male, refusing circumcision, among them would be cut off from his people for breaking the covenant (Gen 17:9-14). So, an individual may fail to remain within the covenant, but yet the promise still remained for the nation. This is a major theme, and has ramifications for what will transpire in the last days. I will go deeper into this in a post discussing the Mosaic covenant given at Mount Sinai.

We also read in this chapter that Sarai, Abraham's wife will bear a son whom they will name Issac. It will be through Him that the covenant made with Abraham will be passed down (Gen 17:25-21).

In Genesis 26:1-5 we now read of the covenant made with Abraham being passed down to his son Isaac. 

"Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham."

Genesis 26:3 NASB 

And from Issac we see the same covenant pass down to his son Jacob, the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob had a dream. In it he saw a ladder reaching up to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it (Gen 28:10-12).

And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and your descendants. Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed."

Genesis 28:13-14 NASB 

As one reads through the Old Testament numerous references are made to God being faithful to the covenant made with Abraham and the fathers. God chose a people through whom a deliverer would come, fulfilling prophecy, destroying the serpent and reversing the curse. God has sworn an oath, and He will fulfill that oath. That plays a huge part in the events that unfold in the last days. 

It must also be mentioned that Abraham had other son's. In fact his eldest, Ishmael was sent away. The covenant was not to pass to him. And Jacob had a twin brother named Esau. The covenant went through Jacob and not Esau. Tragically Jacob relied on trickery to gain Isaac's blessing, and it created a rift that exists to this day. These two events play a significant part in what is to come in future days. 

These are topics for future posts as I lay out a case for the how and why the end time events will play out.

 

Why the End Times? (Intro part 1)

The end time events portrayed in scripture seem daunting to so many people. Many find the symbolism found in much of prophecy confusing, others avoid it out of fear. Many theories exist, based primarily upon denominational bias, to exactly why and how all of these events will unfold, if at all, as some even hold.

However I believe it is pretty important, even necessary to get into these texts and study it out. These prophetic passages have been written into our scriptures under divine inspiration, not to confuse us, but to prepare us and give us hope.

It all starts at the beginning with the fall of man. As a result of Adam and Eve's disobedience, death entered the world, and a curse was placed upon the woman, increasing pain in childbirth, and upon the ground that Adam must now work for food (Genesis 3:16-19). This curse extends throughout the generations, and today we also feel the effects of it in our lives which are also fleeting. We are not immortal, and our days are spent in toil.

The serpent was cursed as well (Genesis 3:14-15). The part I want to focus on is found in verse 15.

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.

 This verse is speaking about one who would come and ultimately defeat the serpent who is none other than Satan,  reversing the curse on all of mankind, and restoring things back to how it was in the garden, where man had unhindered fellowship with God his creator.

In Numbers 24:17 we read a similar prophecy about one who is to come and bring judgement to His enemies in the last days.

"I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, a scepter shall rise from Israel, and shall crush through the forehead of Moab, and tear down the sound of Sheth."

In Psalm 74 we read a Psalm lamenting the destruction of Israel's temple and the affliction of the people. While this no doubt was written in the immediate context of the Babylonian captivity during the time of Nebuchadnezzar, it telescopes out to the future, when something similar but yet more cruel will take place in the land once again. Against this backdrop we read this,

Yet God is my king from of old, who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth. You decided the sea by your strength; you broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as good for the creatures of the wilderness.

Psalm 74:12-14 NASB

And in Isaiah 27:1, a verse found within the context of end time prophecy concerning the great tribulation, God's judgement against His enemies and ultimate restoration of all things. 

In that day the LORD will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, with His fierce and great and mighty sword, even Leviathan the twisted serpent; and He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.

This is speaking of the same things that we have seen in the previous verses. A day is coming when the promised seed, who we know as Jesus the Messiah, will destroy the seed of the serpent as well as the serpent himself. 

In Revelation 21:1-5 we read of a new heaven and a new earth without any death, pain, or tears. All things are now made new again

 Revelation 22:3 adds that there will no longer be any curse, and God's people will see Him face to face in eternal fellowship.

To get from Genesis 3 and the fall of mankind to the restoration of all things found in the last few chapters of Revelation we must go through a time of intense tribulation, where evil reaches its ultimate intensity in a man empowered by Satan, who is often referred to as the antichrist. 

This is where we need to study, we need to find the truth, and we need to prepare. 

I have written many posts on this sight concerning these events.  I have tagged them, so feel free to search them out and prayerfully contemplate them. I plan to continue this topic over the next several posts the Lord willing, as I feel we need to be grounded in these things.

Coming Like a Thief

"But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will 

Matt 24:43-44 NASB

Jesus exhorts us to be alert and ready for His appearing. While it is true that we do not know the day or hour of His coming, this statement does not stand alone by itself. Jesus has just finished foretelling the signs and events leading up to His return, so we must take this passage as a whole. We have been given distinct things to watch for. His coming will be unexpected for many, but those who are awake and watching will be ready as they see the signs fulfilled.

Now as to the times and epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not if night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 NASB

In a similar fashion Paul admonishes his readers to be on the alert as well. While the return of Christ will be a sudden unexpected event for many, those who are alert and watching will not be caught unaware. 

We see two groups listed in this passage. Those who are of the light and day, and those who are of darkness and the night. From this we can see that the unsaved world will be taken by surprise when Jesus appears in judgement. They will not be ready, all of the signs of His soon appearance will go largely unoticed. Just like the people in the days of Noah were oblivious to what was about to occur, so too, those who are living in darkness will be caught by surprise.

Those who are of the light, the faithful, will be alert and ready. They will see the signs, and know that Christ is about to come. They will be ready to meet Him. 

So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.

Revelation 3:3-4 NASB

 Revelation records for us many events and signs that will occur prior to the thief-like appearance of Jesus Christ. Their are seven seals, seven trumpets and seven bowls of judgement that all culminate together at the final moment when the sky splits and Christ returns in power and glory. The last warning we read in relation to His sudden appearance is found in the context of the gathering of the armies for the battle of Armageddon.

 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates; and it dried up, so that the way would be prepared for the kings from the east. And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. ("Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, do that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.") And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon

Revelation 16:12-16 NASB

Any Christian alive at this point in history has lived through the most intense three and one half years of time. They have witnessed the signs that have occured over the previous seven years and are looking up because their redemption is drawing near. 

Take note of the fact that this is not an event that happens before the tribulation! Popular dispensational theology teaches that Jesus comes like a thief to gather the saints in a secret rapture, removing them from the earth before the tribulation begins. What we have just read contradicts this erroneous teaching. As the armies of the world are gathering for the final battle, the warning still stands. Jesus has not yet come like a thief, we must remain vigilant.

The rest of the world will be eating, drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage. They have taken the mark. They can buy and sell. No one is persecuting them, in fact, they worship the beast that is persecuting Christians. They will cheer as the antichrist invades Israel. Yes, as these events all unfold they will be caught by surprise when Jesus unexpectedly appears. By the time dread overtakes them it will be too late.

"But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Luke 21:28 NASB

What things are Jesus referring to? The events leading up to His return. The things He has just mentioned in the previous verses (Luke 21:10-27).

"Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all  those who dwell on the face of all the earth. But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

Luke 21:34-36 NASB

We must be prayerfully alert. Our strength comes from God. Many do not expect to see these days. They believe that they will be long gone, taken up when Jesus comes like a thief to rapture them. But here we see that we must have the strength to endure, to hold fast without giving in, as the events of the last days unfold around us. Our focus must be on Christ, we must look up expectantly, waiting for His sudden appearance. How tragic for one to be this close, only to give up under pressure.

Will We be Ready?

And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and the cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and stand before the Son of man.

Dark days are coming upon the earth. At some point in time, maybe sooner than we think, biblical prophecy will unfold, and the events of the final seven years of this age will occur. I believe multitudes of professing Christians will be caught by surprise. They will not be ready. 

I have noticed a lack of teaching on these subjects lately. I haven't heard any sermons geared towards preparing people for Earth's final days. These are things Christians are not talking about. One pastor that I recently had a casual conversation with admitted that he didn't know what he believed about the end times. He hadn't really looked into it. I have heard others share the same concerns. They have also noticed a strange silence in their churches as well. 

It's not as though there is a lack of end times information. Vast numbers of books have been written on the subject, the Internet is filled with videos and websites, some good, and others not so good. There are plenty of teachers out there promoting their version of how the last days will play out, and no doubt people are tuning in to see what they have to say. However, when I step into church, I'm not hearing conversations, I'm not hearing sermons, about world events that will someday be upon us.

 I believe we have been set up for failure. On the one hand there is the popular teaching that we will not be here when all hell breaks loose. The main thing is to make sure you are ready for the rapture. The rest, as concerns us as Christians, isn't anything that will affect us.

The other teaching, one, more common than I realized, is that there will be no actual end times tribulation. All of the last days events foretold in biblical prophecy are symbolic, an apocalyptic portrayal of the battle between good and evil. All we as Christians need to do is wait for Jesus to someday come. While persecution has been a real thing all along, an end times Antichrist orchestrating great tribulation is only symbolic. Again, why worry?

What if we are wrong? What if there is indeed a day coming when the events that so many  have spiritualized away into nothingness actually come to pass, and we as a Church are still here, contrary to popular belief?

I don't mean to offend anyone who may hold to any of these teachings. I understand that prophecy is not easy to understand, and a wide range of views are held by Christians throughout the world. I also understand that there are committed Christians who are looking into these things with the same interest and concern that I have. Therefore I am speaking in general terms when I voice my concerns. My intent is not to create heated debate between brothers and sisters, nor is it to belittle the beliefs of others. I write this out of a concern for the Church. I read the scriptures and see hard times coming, and a great falling away from the faith occuring at the same time. 

Speaking of the return of Christ to gather his elect, we read of a great falling away that will occur first, along with the revealing of the "Man of sin" who we know as the Antichrist (2 Thess 2:1-4). This passage that has commonly been used to teach a prettrib rapture event actually teaches quite the opposite. Before Jesus returns to gather His faithful, many professing Christianity, instead of being raptured, will actually apostasize from the faith. This verse is clear, Christians will see the revealing of the Antichrist, and many will not make it. This affirms the words of Jesus, who foretold that the "love of many will grow cold." He admonishes us that one must "endure to the end to be saved" (Matt 24:11-12).

This is what is so tragic. How can we be better prepared to face the future? And if we never live to experience these events, how can we ensure that the future generation who will, is adequately equipped to stand for Jesus during Earth's greatest trial?

I have a few thoughts that I will briefly share. I will put them down here, and perhaps go deeper into them in future posts. 

1. We must recapture the "Maranatha" cry.

The early Church looked for and longed for the return of Christ. It was not so much that they wanted to escape trials and trouble, but they had such an incredible love for Jesus Himself. I fear that many today have entrenched themselves into the affairs of this life. They have made a good life for themselves, and seek to keep up that standard. Like a child who spoils his appetite by eating a cookie before supper, many of us have got it so good here (at least here in America) that we no longer long for eternity with Jesus. We may give the idea of the return of Jesus some fleeting thoughts, but it is not a deep aching reality for a lot of us. We are too content here. At the close of his life the apostle Paul said this,

     Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing (2 Timothy 4:8 KJV).

Are we numbered with those who "eagerly await Him" (Hebrews 9:28)?

2. We must recover a theology of martyrdom and suffering.

The early Church suffered intense persecution, yet they turned their world upside down for the cause of Christ. To identify with Jesus, to be baptized into His death, took on a literal meaning for them. Countless others have paid the ultimate price for their devotion to Christ down through the centuries. Jesus Himself calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him. To save our lives is to lose our lives, while to lose our lives for His sake and the gospel's is to save them in the end (Mark 8:34-35).

We live in a time where we consider it persecution when the cashier at Walmart won't wish us a Merry Christmas. How will we make it when this verse is a reality,

     And they overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death (Rev 12:11 KJV emphasis mine).

Martyrdom will be the primary way out of the great tribulation (see Rev 6:9-11, 7:9-17). Are we ready?

3. We need solid biblical teaching on the end times.

The Apostle Paul spent three weeks in Thessalonica (Acts 17:1-4). During this time souls were saved and a Church was planted. Paul was forced to leave because of persecution. However, in that three week period this group of "baby" Christians were soundly taught enough to thrive in the midst of suffering themselves (1Thess 1:14). They were also taught about the last days (1Thess 5:1-11, 2 Thess 2:5). Can you imagine a class for new converts today, where the main topic is a deep dive into eschatology? Could it be that this enabled them to endure the suffering that they faced? 

Instead of running from prophecy because it is hard to understand, or scary to talk about, we must dig into it, learn it, and pass it on to others. The book of Revelation is perhaps the most misunderstood and therefore neglected book of the Bible. Yet we read this,

     Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near (Rev 1:3 NASB).

We need solid teaching based upon what the Bible actually says about the events surrounding the last days and the return of Christ. There is way more found throughout both Testaments than most of us realize. From the Prophets to Revelation an end times scenario unfolds. It is here that we learn why the events will unfold the way they do, who are the nations involved, where will the "Beast" come from, and at what point will Jesus return to establish His kingdom. 

There is a lot of prophecy teaching out there, some of it is sound, but so much of it is mere speculation. It must line up with the word of God. Beware of those who have to spiritualize things away to hold to a particular doctrine. Yes there are symbols found in prophecy, but these symbols represent real things. If something can be taken literally, then take it literally. Wading through so much of the stuff out there is like navigating a minefield. It will explode in the end, and take many adherents with it I'm afraid.

We are warned throughout scripture to avoid deception, especially as it concerns those who will go through the last days. We must know and understand the truth. There is no more time to remain ignorant of these things. The Church cannot afford to remain in the dark,

     But you brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober (1 Thess 5:4-6 NASB).

Paul wrote this to the Thessalonian Church. He knew that they had an understanding that went beyond a mere head knowledge, but had entered their hearts. Can we say the same today? 

There are many more things I could say here, but this must suffice for now. Perhaps, God willing, I can expand on this in future posts. There is a day coming when Jesus will return, but before He comes there will be tribulation. If we are the generation to see all of these things come to pass will we be ready?

The Seventy Weeks of Daniel (Part 7, The Time of Jacob's Trouble)

And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

                                   Daniel 9:27 KJV

As I explained in my previous post, Israel has been lulled into a false sense of security by an individual who confirms a covenant with her enemies. What will this covenant look like? Look for something that guarantees Israel's right to exist in the land, and to restart the sacrificial system, and build a temple. However this plays out, Israel will be found living securely without walls or gates. This is something that is hard to imagine today (see The Seventy Weeks of Daniel Part 6). 

We do know from scripture that at the mid point of this final seven year period something changes, and catches Israel completely off guard. Two things happen, an invasion of Israel by a coalition of Middle Eastern and North African nations (Ezekiel 38:1-16), and the placing of what is referred to as the abomination of desolation. This event is foretold by Daniel in several places, as well as the apostle Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4, and John in Revelation 13:6, 12-15. For the sake of time and space I will not quote all of these passages. Please read them for yourself. I have linked all of these passages so you can read them as you read this post.

In Daniel 8:9-11 we read of a little horn, another term for the Antichrist, who stops the daily sacrifice, and desecrates the newly built temple. As Gabriel explains the vision recorded in this chapter we discover that this little horn will be a king of fierce countenance, who will have a power outside of himself that will enable him to destroy the holy people, and prosper in what he does for a season. This king will magnify himself in his heart, even standing up to the "Prince of princes" who we know as Jesus (Daniel 8:23-25).

And in Daniel 11:21-31 this same "little horn" is referred to as a vile person who gains a kingdom through flattery. This individual makes a league with others, but afterwards works deceitfully in building a coalition of nations. Just as the term "little horn" is representative of a small leader, this man, starts small and gains power as he goes along.

He reaches a point where he becomes enraged at the "holy covenant" (Daniel 11:30), and at this point he invades Jerusalem, takes away the sacrifice, and places the abomination of desolation, the beginning of a period of intense persecution leading up to the time of the end.

Just as we read in Daniel chapter 8, this king will magnify himself above every god, even God Himself. He will do as he wills, and prosper until the determined time set by God to accomplish His divine purpose (Daniel 11:36).

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book.

                                    Daniel 12:1 KJV

Compare to Jeremiah 30:6-9

6. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? Therefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?

7. Alas! For that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.

8. For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:

9. But they shall serve the LORD their GOD, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

Jesus refers to this time of Jacob's trouble in Matthew 24:15-21. He warns that when the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet takes place, those in Judaea must flee. This is the time of Jacob's trouble, or in the words of Jesus, "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the begining of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be."

We have the witness of three men, Daniel, Jeremiah, and Jesus. They are all speaking of the same event, which starts with the invasion of Jerusalem ( see also Luke 21:20-22), and the placing of the abomination of desolation. This time of tribulation will be unlike anything that the world has seen up to now. As Luke records, For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled (Luke 21:22).

This unequaled time of tribulation will last for a "Time, times, and a half" until the scattering of the power of the holy people is accomplished (Daniel 12:7)

In Revelation 12:2-17 we read that the dragon ( Satan) persecutes the woman (symbolic of Israel), who flees into the  wilderness for 1,260 days (Rev 12:6), and verse 14 refers to this same time period again as a "Time, times, and half a time. Revelation 11:2 tells us that Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles for forty-two months, and we read in Revelation 13:5-7 that the beast ( Antichrist) will have power to rule for forty-two months. During this time he blasphemes God, and makes war with, and overcomes the saints. 

All of these passages are speaking of the same event. The invasion of Israel beginning with the placing of the abomination in the temple will start a reign of terror that the world has never seen the likes of. This period of time will last three and one half years. During this time period the nation of Israel will face incredible devastation. Zechariah records that in the land of Israel, two third of the Jewish people will be cut off and perish, with one third left who will be refined as silver is refined and gold is tried. This is what is referred to as the scattering of the power of the holy people, what is meant by the saints being overcome. At the point of their absolute helplessness and hopelessness, when rock bottom has been reached, they will call on the LORD, and he will hear (Zechariah 13:8-9).

I am emphasizing the persecution of the Jewish people during this period of time. By no means do I intend to leave the impression that Christians will be gone from the earth at this time in history. Revelation 7:9-27 records that a great multitude comprised of people of every nation will come out of the great tribulation. How do they come out? They are martyrs, they were killed for their faith. My intention here is to dig into the seventy week prophecy of Daniel, which refers primarily to his people, the Jewish race, and what they will go through to bring them back into covenant relationship with their God. 

If we look back at the purpose statements found in Daniel 9:24, we see that the restoration of Israel is the conclusion of this prophecy.

1. Finish the transgression.

2. Make an end of sins.

3. Make reconciliation for iniquity.

4. Bring in everlasting righteousness.

5. Seal up vision and prophecy.

6. Annoint the most holy place 

At the conclusion of the seventy weeks, we must see the national salvation of Israel, and the triumphant reign of Christ. There is a thread throughout scripture that foretells this. As I finish up these posts on Daniel's seventy weeks, I would like to look at the future restoration of Israel to the bond of the eternal covenant.
