The Timing of the Marriage Supper

Popular dispensational theology teaches that the Church is taken up to heaven prior to the start of what is known as the great tribulation. Immediately, the marriage supper of the Lamb takes place in heaven, while those who have been left behind go through the horrors of the tribulation.

It would do us well to look into this a bit deeper however, as the Bible has much to say on this subject, and it doesn't align with what many of us have been taught.

I would like to examine two passages found in the book of Isaiah, along with a few other passages to provide clarity. Both of these portions of scripture pertain to the time of Israel's ultimate deliverance at the return of their Messiah, Jesus Christ. 

2. In that day the branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth will be the pride and the adornment of the survivors of Israel.

3. It will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy- everyone who is recorded for life in Jerusalem.

4. When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and purged the bloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgement and the spirit of burning,

5. then the LORD will create over the whole area of Mount Zion and over her assemblies, a cloud by day, even smoke, and the brightness of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory will be a canopy.

6. There will be a shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and refuge and protection from the storm and the rain.

Isaiah 4:2-6 NASB

This prophecy is foretelling the day of Israel's national salvation. At the return of Christ they will recognize Him and go through a time of deep sorrow and repentance (Zechariah 13:10-13:1).

The great tribulation has brought the nation to its knees so to speak, and those who have survived will find grace poured out, their sins washed away, and in the words of Paul the apostle, "So all Israel will be saved." (See Romans 11:25-27 for context).

But there is more. We see mention of a cloud by day, and a flaming fire by night over all who are assembled in the area of Mount Zion. Remember the significance of the cloud and pillar of fire leading the people out of Egypt, and through the wilderness? God's presence went with the people in the cloud and in the fire.

In Exodus we read of the giving of the law at Mount Sinai. We again see the presence of God descend upon the Mount in fire and cloud (Exodus 19:18). In Exodus 24:1-18 the people affirm the covenant that God has made with them. Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Elihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up and saw God. They ate and drank with Him before Moses ascended the Mountain to receive the stone tablets of the law.

15. Then Moses went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.

16.The glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and on the seventh day He called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. 

17. And to the eyes of the sons of Isreal the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.

18. Moses entered the midst of the cloud as he went up to the mountain; and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Exodus 24:15-18 NASB

The making of this covenant was a betrothal between the LORD and the nation of Israel. When we read the verses where God accused His wayward people of spiritual adultery, it was more than a metaphor for Idolatry, in a very unique sense, Idolatry is indeed adultery.

 We read in Hosea of God's sorrow over His adulterous bride. He says He is no longer Israel's husband, and they are no longer His bride (Hosea 2:2), yet we see God's yearning to heal and restore as well when He states that He cannot give them up, but will bring them back ( Hosea 11:8-12). We have this promise found in Hosea 2:19-20,

      

19. "I will betroth you to Me forever; yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, in loving kindness and in compassion,

20. And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the LORD.

Just as we saw in the above passage in Isaiah, the context of this chapter in Hosea pertains to the restoration of Israel after the tribulation. They will go through the valley of Achor (trouble) and find hope (Hosea 2:24-23). Tribulation comes first, then the marriage.

Isaiah chapters 24-27 once again set the context for the next few verses I will quote. Again the theme is Israel's ultimate deliverance following the great tribulation. Chapter 24 speaks of the Earth's devastation prior to the Lord ruling in Mount Zion. What follows is a song of praise. This is where we read of a future feast.

6. The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain;

7. A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, and refined aged wine.

8. And on this mountain He will swallow up death for all time, and the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, and He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; for the LORD has spoken.

Isaiah 25:6-8 NASB

 This is speaking of the same event. The people are gathered at Mount Zion where Jesus has had come to set up His kingdom. Israel has turned from their unbelief and has experienced the grace of God. They have been restored, and now it is time for the marriage supper. 

Back in Isaiah 4:5 we read of a canopy over all who are assembled there. In Hebrew this is referred to as a "chûppâh". Traditional Jewish weddings to this day are performed under a chûppâh or canopy. For those familiar with the musical "Fiddler on the roof," remember the scene where Hodel is waiting for the train with her Father, Tevye? She is on her way to Siberia where Perchik has been sent to prison. When Tevye expresses his concert about her upcoming marriage to Perchik she assured him that "there will be a canopy."

The readers of this prophecy would have caught the allusion to a marriage and wedding feast in these passages. The idea of the marriage supper of the Lamb is not a New Testament idea, it has its beginning in the Old. It is quite possible that Jesus had this in mind when He made this statement,

"I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven."

Matt 8:11 NIV

He makes this statement after seeing the faith of a Roman centurion, foretelling the inclusion of the Gentiles into the kingdom as well. Likewise the apostle Paul declared that Gentile believers will be grafted in to the same root (Romans 11:13-17). 

Indeed, we are one body, Jew and Gentile believers in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:12-16). Writing to Gentile believers in Corinth, Paul has this to say,

For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.

2 Corinthians 11:2

There are not two brides, but one. A teaching propagated by the Scofield study Bible states that Israel is the bride of Jehovah, while the Church is the bride of Christ. There is no confirmation of such an idea found in scripture. To believe this you must either destroy the unity of the Trinity, in effect making multiple Gods, or else make God a polygamist. I choose to do neither.

When Jesus returns, He is coming for one bride and partaking in one wedding feast.

7. "Let us rejoice and be glad and give glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready."

8. It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

9. Then he said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb,' " And he said to me, "These are the true words of God."

Revelation 19:7-9 NASB

This announcement is made immediately before heaven opens and Jesus returns. The tribulation is over, the antichrist and the armies assembled with him are about to be destroyed at the coming of Christ.

There are four points I would like to make after considering all of these passages of scripture.

1. The marriage supper does not take place in heaven. The passages we looked at all show the opposite. The supper will be celebrated on the earth.

2. The marriage supper does not occur prior to the great tribulation. The passages we have studied all point to a post tribulation event. Jesus returns at the end of the final time of "Jacob's trouble" and Israel is redeemed as a nation. Then the marriage supper occurs.

3. The Church does not celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb in heaven while Israel suffers under the scourge of the antichrist on the earth. There is only one bride of Christ, and only one marriage supper. 

4. When one contemplates all of this it becomes plain that the pre-trib rapture theology is in error. Scripture abundantly proves the opposite to be true instead. It is far better to know the truth and prepare ourselves for what is coming than to be be caught by surprise when what we have been taught is proven to be false.

Coming Like a Thief

"But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will 

Matt 24:43-44 NASB

Jesus exhorts us to be alert and ready for His appearing. While it is true that we do not know the day or hour of His coming, this statement does not stand alone by itself. Jesus has just finished foretelling the signs and events leading up to His return, so we must take this passage as a whole. We have been given distinct things to watch for. His coming will be unexpected for many, but those who are awake and watching will be ready as they see the signs fulfilled.

Now as to the times and epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not if night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 NASB

In a similar fashion Paul admonishes his readers to be on the alert as well. While the return of Christ will be a sudden unexpected event for many, those who are alert and watching will not be caught unaware. 

We see two groups listed in this passage. Those who are of the light and day, and those who are of darkness and the night. From this we can see that the unsaved world will be taken by surprise when Jesus appears in judgement. They will not be ready, all of the signs of His soon appearance will go largely unoticed. Just like the people in the days of Noah were oblivious to what was about to occur, so too, those who are living in darkness will be caught by surprise.

Those who are of the light, the faithful, will be alert and ready. They will see the signs, and know that Christ is about to come. They will be ready to meet Him. 

So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.

Revelation 3:3-4 NASB

 Revelation records for us many events and signs that will occur prior to the thief-like appearance of Jesus Christ. Their are seven seals, seven trumpets and seven bowls of judgement that all culminate together at the final moment when the sky splits and Christ returns in power and glory. The last warning we read in relation to His sudden appearance is found in the context of the gathering of the armies for the battle of Armageddon.

 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river, the Euphrates; and it dried up, so that the way would be prepared for the kings from the east. And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. ("Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, do that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.") And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon

Revelation 16:12-16 NASB

Any Christian alive at this point in history has lived through the most intense three and one half years of time. They have witnessed the signs that have occured over the previous seven years and are looking up because their redemption is drawing near. 

Take note of the fact that this is not an event that happens before the tribulation! Popular dispensational theology teaches that Jesus comes like a thief to gather the saints in a secret rapture, removing them from the earth before the tribulation begins. What we have just read contradicts this erroneous teaching. As the armies of the world are gathering for the final battle, the warning still stands. Jesus has not yet come like a thief, we must remain vigilant.

The rest of the world will be eating, drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage. They have taken the mark. They can buy and sell. No one is persecuting them, in fact, they worship the beast that is persecuting Christians. They will cheer as the antichrist invades Israel. Yes, as these events all unfold they will be caught by surprise when Jesus unexpectedly appears. By the time dread overtakes them it will be too late.

"But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Luke 21:28 NASB

What things are Jesus referring to? The events leading up to His return. The things He has just mentioned in the previous verses (Luke 21:10-27).

"Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all  those who dwell on the face of all the earth. But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

Luke 21:34-36 NASB

We must be prayerfully alert. Our strength comes from God. Many do not expect to see these days. They believe that they will be long gone, taken up when Jesus comes like a thief to rapture them. But here we see that we must have the strength to endure, to hold fast without giving in, as the events of the last days unfold around us. Our focus must be on Christ, we must look up expectantly, waiting for His sudden appearance. How tragic for one to be this close, only to give up under pressure.

The Restrainer, the Dragon, and the Beast

      Christians have long sought to understand the identity of the restrainer mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12. Paul is addressing an issue that the Thessalonian church was facing. It seemed that they were under the impression that the day of the Lord had already taken place. Naturally, this had shaken their faith, and Paul seeks to remind them of what he had previously taught them. 

     A common view of this passage is that these Christians had somehow come to believe that the rapture of the church had already taken place, and they had been left behind. This passage has been used as a proof text by those who promote the pre-tribulation rapture of the church. Therefore, Paul, attempts to show them that they have not missed the day of the Lord. 

     Let no man deceive you by any means; for that day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God (2 Thess 2:3-4 NKJV).

     Now this passage is telling us that the coming of Christ, and our gathering to Him (2 Thess 2:1) will not occur until there is a great falling away from the faith, and the man of sin (Antichrist) is revealed. This already causes a problem for a pre-trib position, as they hold that the church is gone at the start of the final seven- year period known as the tribulation. 

     Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way (2 Thess 2:5-7 NKJV).  

     The question becomes that of, "Who or what is the restrainer?" Again, a common view is the Holy Spirit. I quoted these verses out of the New King James Version, where they capitalize the pronoun He, to show deity. However, did the NKJV translators impose their belief system into the text in this verse? 

     Pre- trib theology holds that the restrainer is the Holy Spirit, indwelling the church. Once the church is raptured, the Holy Spirit is absent from the earth, allowing the man of sin to be revealed. But Paul has just told us that the day of the Lord will not come until the antichrist is revealed, not before. The Holy Spirit within the church cannot be the restrainer according to what Paul has just stated. This causes a problem for a pre- trib rapture theology. Many Christians lament the fact that the Thessalonian Christians knew the identity of the restrainer (2 Thess 2:6), but Paul never mentioned him by name in this epistle. But is the Bible silent about the restrainer? Is there something the Thessalonians knew that we could know as well?

     It is helpful to understand that the early church was steeped in the Old Testament writings. The New Testament books and epistles were in the process of being written and passed around, but had not yet been formulated into what we now know as the Bible. When one studies prophecy it is crucial to look at the Old Testament prophets as well. Perhaps the one book that is absolutely necessary to a proper understanding of end time events is the book of Daniel. His visions of the end time events are referred to by Jesus, and form much of the background for the book of Revelation. 

     In Daniel chapter 12 we read of a time of trouble coming upon the world. Such trouble the world had never seen up to this point (compare Jesus' statement in Matt 24: 21).

     "At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:1-2 NKJV)

     And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, "How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?" Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished (Daniel 12:6-7 NKJV).

     Daniel links the start of the great tribulation with the standing up of the arch angel Michael. What Michael does is not apparent here, but there is a link non the less. I also quoted verses 6 and 7, highlighting the words "time, times, and half a time". This phrase is found elsewhere in prophecy, and is interchangeable with forty two months, and 1260 days. What is revealed here, is that the time of the great tribulation is to last three and one half years. 

     Note also the mention of the resurrection of the dead. The various scriptures that mention the return of Christ, and the gathering of His people, also refer to the raising of the dead at the same time (1 Cor 15:52; 1 Thess 4:16-17). Notice here in Daniel 12 that the resurrection is placed at the end (see also Daniel 12:13). Again, this does not fit the idea of a pretribulational rapture. 

     We read in Revelation 12 of a war in heaven,

     And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon: and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time." 

     Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (Rev 12:7-17 NKJV).

     In this passage we read of a point in time when Satan is thrown out of heaven. I don't have all the answers, but apparently Satan has access to heaven (Job 1:6), but at some point he is defeated by Michael and his angels and cast out for good. He is filled with great wrath and pursues the woman who represents Israel (see Rev 12:1-6). Revelation 12 uses the symbols of the woman and a dragon with seven heads and ten horns to show how Satan has sought to destroy the male child (Jesus, the Messiah) through various empires throughout history, The time frame of this final assault is the last three and one half years of this age, when Satan is cast down to the earth. Notice again the reference to a time, times and half a time. This is the same reference as we saw in Daniel chapter 12, where Daniel prophecies of a time of trouble unrivaled in world history, We see here that a remnant of Israel finds protection in the wilderness, so the Devil, in his anger, seeks out her offspring who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus. This group of people refers to Christians who will also suffer persecution on the earth at this point in history.

     We read of a beast, a mirror image of Satan, arising out of the sea in Revelation 13,

     Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority (Rev 13:1-2 NKJV).

     This is the emergence of the man of lawlessness and his kingdom. He receives his power and authority from Satan himself. Daniel has a vision of four kingdoms rising out of the great sea. In the Bible this refers to the Mediterranean sea. These kingdoms are represented by a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a dreadful beast unlike the others before it. (Daniel 7:1-7). This beast, in Revelation 13, is the fourth beast with ten horns, and is a conglomeration of the first three. Again, it is a mirror image of the dragon (Satan), with one difference. The dragon has crowns on his seven heads, while this beast has the crowns on it's ten horns. This signifies that this beast is the final world empire, consisting of ten united nations, under one wicked ruler. (Daniel 2:41-45; Rev 17:12-13). The world marvels after this beast,

     And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshipped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"  And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty two months. then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Rev 13: 3-8NKJV).

     This is the start of the great tribulation, We read here that the beast's authority is to last forty two months (Time, times, and half a time). He speaks blasphemous things against God. Daniel 7 records that a "little horn" rises out from among the ten horns on the fourth beast speaking arrogant words (Daniel 7:7-11). This horn makes war with the saints, and prevails against them for a time, times, and half a time, until the Ancient of Days comes and makes a judgement in favor of His saints (Daniel 7:19-27).

     This is the man of sin referred to in 2 Thessalonians 2: 3-4 who sits in the temple, exalting himself above God. This is also what Jesus refers to as the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet (Matt 24:15; Daniel 9:24-27). The restrainer has been removed, and the Antichrist is revealed. This is the midpoint of the 70th week of Daniel, also commonly referred to by many, as the seven year tribulation. 

     To sum up, something is restraining the man of lawlessness, but it cannot be the Holy Spirit through the Church. Paul clearly links the coming of the Lord and our gathering to Him, with the "Day of the Lord." He states that that day will not come until a great falling away from the faith occurs, and the man of sin, who exalts himself above God in the temple of God, is revealed. We see the activity of Michael linked to the start of the great tribulation (the final 3 and 1/2 years) in Daniel 12, and also of the war in heaven between Michael with his angels, against the Devil and his angels. Satan is cast down to the earth where mounts an unprecedented assault, through a beast empire against the people of God. At the head of this unholy empire is the Antichrist who has authority given to him by Satan, which is to last for 3 and 1/2 years.

     Is Michael the restrainer? I am not dogmatic about it; I believe he has something to do with this, but I do not claim to have all the answers. I do know from reading Paul's second epistle to the Thessalonians however, that the Church will see the revealing of the Antichrist, when the restrainer is removed (2 Thess 2:3-8). There are abundant scriptures showing the presence of Christ's followers upon the earth, through the tribulation (Rev 7:9-17), until Christ's glorious appearing to gather His own, and destroy the lawless one (2 Thess 2:8).

The Return of Christ

     Jesus tells us that His return will follow the Cosmic signs in the sky at the end of the 3 1/2 years of tribulation. "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other" (Matt 24:30-31 NASB).

     There are some common themes found in these verses that are repeated in other passages relating to the second coming of our Lord. In Daniel 7:13-14 we read of one like a Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven, approaching the Ancient of Days to receive an eternal kingdom. Jesus also claims this passage to Himself when interrogated by the high priest (Mark 14:61-62). We also read of the coming day when Egypt will come under a "cruel master" (Isaiah 19:4). This chapter foretells of the suffering of Egypt, and their ultimate redemption as they turn to the Lord in their time of distress. It begins with the LORD coming on swift cloud (Isaiah 19:1), ultimately placing this in the last days. Revelation 14:14-16 states, Then I looked, and behold a cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, "Thrust in your sickle and reap, for the time has come for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe." So He who sat on the cloud  thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped. (NKJV)  The return of Christ will be the time when the saints are gathered to Him.

   Jesus tells us that when the sign of the Son of man appears in the sky, all the tribes of the earth will mourn. Revelation 1:7 agrees with this. Behold He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him, so it is to be. Amen. This verse is taking from Daniel 7:13, and Zechariah 12:10, which reads, "I will pour out on the house of of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and supplication, so they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn."  The appearance of Jesus in the sky will certainly cause grief and mourning for those who are caught unaware, who are not spiritually ready to meet Him. However, it will be a day of salvation for the surviving remnant of Israel, who at the end of the brutal tribulation, will have their hearts open to receive their Messiah, the one whom they pierced at the time of His first coming to earth. God will pour out on them a Spirit of grace and supplication, they will repent with great sorrow at this time and so "All Israel will be saved." (Romans 11:26)

     And we read of the voice of the angel, and the trumpet blast in the epistles of Paul. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed (1Cor 15:52 NASB). 

     For the Lord Himself descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the arch-angel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord (1 Thess 4:16-17 NASB).

     John saw this in his revelation of Jesus Christ, Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that there will be delay no longer, but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He preached to His servants the prophets (Rev 10:5-7 NASB).  

     Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever." (Rev 11:15) These verses quoted out of Revelation are in the context of the angels with the seven trumpets. This is speaking of the sounding of the seventh trumpet, the same trumpet Paul refers to in his epistles, and what Jesus speaks of in His teaching on the end of the age. This is the trumpet blast that is sounded at the return of Christ.

     It is in Revelation 19 where we read of Christ's return, and the events that occur at that time. this is a subject I will explore in future posts. Let us all find ourselves ready to "Stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36).

Fear or Faith

      The last days will be a time of great trial upon the earth. We have looked at the teaching of Jesus concerning the time of the end, comparing it to the breaking of the seals in the book of Revelation. Up to this point we have briefly discussed deception, wars, famines, persecution, and the signs in the heavens that will precede the second coming of Jesus.

     Jesus, at the close of His parable on prayer found in Luke 18:1-8, asks a question that we all should seriously ponder. "When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?" This parable closes with the mention of the elect crying out to God for justice, and His faithfulness to carry it out (Luke 18:7-8). Revelation 6:9-10 tells of the martyred saints crying out to the Lord for judgement, and an avenging of their blood, upon those who dwell upon the earth. I think this is no accident, and Jesus is teaching us that persistent prayer is linked to faith, and that it is, and will be absolutely necessary to make it through the time of sorrow coming upon the world. 

     "But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36 NASB). At first glance many may think this is a reference to a pre-trib rapture, hoping that we as Christians will not experience any of these events. But why pray that we will have strength to be raptured? It makes no sense. Jesus is telling us that in light of all the chaos taking place around us, the persecution, the deception, apostasy, natural disasters and cosmic signs, we must have an unwavering faith. "By your endurance you will gain your lives" (Luke 21:19). "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved" (Matt 24:13). "He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son" (Rev 21:7).

     Contrast this with the unbelieving people of this earth, great and small, who hide themselves from the wrath of God, calling for the mountains and rocks to cover them from His presence (Rev 6:15-17). Jesus tells us that men will faint from fear as all these things are happening (Luke 21:26). But as for those of us who love Him, and long for His appearing (2 Tim 4:8), when we see these things taking place, we must look up for our redemption is drawing near (Luke 21:28).

Cosmic Signs

     Continuing on in the Olivet discourse Jesus states,

     "But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken" (Matt 24:29NASB). 

     Jesus refers here to several old testament passage that portray the same events set to occur at the "day of the LORD".  Isaiah 13 contains a prophecy against Babylon, the nation that was to carry the people of Judah into exile. Although this exile was due to Judah's apostasy, yet God would judge Babylon for its cruelty. This prophecy, although fulfilled in part when the Medes and Persians conquered Babylon, telescopes out to the future, and the day of the LORD.

     Wail for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as a destruction from the Almighty. Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man's heart will melt. They will be terrified, pains and anguish will take hold of them; they will writhe like a woman in labor, they will look at one another in astonishment, their faces aflame. Behold the day of the LORD is coming, cruel, with fury and burning anger, to make the land a desolation; and He will exterminate its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shed its light.  Thus I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud and abase the haughtiness of the ruthless. I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold and mankind than the gold of Ophir. Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the fury of the LORD of hosts in the day of His burning anger (Isaiah 13:6-13 NASB).

     I have underlined the sections that Jesus refers to in Matthew 24. Again, the context of this portion of Isaiah 13 is the day of the LORD, and Jesus links this with His return.

     Isaiah 34 also foretells the time of God's wrath and indignation upon the nations and their armies (Isaiah 34:2). At this time All the hosts of heaven will wear away, and the sky will be rolled up as a scroll; all their hosts will also wither away as a leaf withers away from the vine, or as one withers from the fig tree (Isaiah 34:4 NASB). 

     Now let's look at the breaking of the sixth seal in Revelation chapter six. This event is set to occur after the martyrdom unleashed by the breaking of the fifth seal. This agrees with the statement of Jesus we read above (Matt 24:9). I grew up with the teaching of a pre-trib rapture. Part of my understanding was that the moon was to turn dark red before this event occurred. Yet we see here that this idea is actually wrong, it does not agree with Jesus' teaching, or the words of this chapter either. We actually find that the bible teaches the opposite here.

     I looked when he broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places (Rev 6:12-14 NASB).

     This passage of scripture also draws from the old testament. Notice the quotation of Isaiah 34:4 here. The book of Joel is also quoted,

     "I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, blood, fire and columns of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes" (Joel 2:30-31 NASB). 

     This verse is found in a passage foretelling the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Peter quotes from this passage on the day of Pentecost, explaining to the people what it was they were seeing and hearing (Acts 2:14-21). Peter's focus was on the signs that accompanied the filling of the Holy Spirit, but this prophecy, like so many others, looks also to the distant future and finds its final fulfillment at the end of this age. 

     Scripture interprets scripture. You will find a continuity between the books of the bible, both old testament and new. It is fascinating to see the number of old testament quotes found in the new testament. The book of Revelation relies heavily upon old testament imagery. I would recommend to everyone who seeks to study scripture, and in this case, prophecy, that you use those cross references that many bible's contain. You will find these things spoken of throughout the word of God.

     

     

      

The Rapture, What Does the Bible Teach?

A great majority of modern evangelical Christians hold to what is commonly known as the "Pre-trib rapture" of the Church. The basic idea is that at some point in time just prior to the great tribulation, Christ will return, secretly catching away believers, sparing them from the wrath to come. Scriptures such as Matthew 24:40-42, 1 Thess 4:16-17, and 1 Thess 5:9, are used as texts to back up this teaching. This doctrine has been promoted in recent times by teachers such as Hal Lindsey, and John Haggee, movies such as "A Thief in The Night", and the popular Left Behind series of books.

This has not been the view that the Church has historically held. It is a more recent teaching that has come about in the last 180 years.  What started as a vision a fifteen year old girl claimed to receive in 1830 , was promoted by John Darby, then  by C. I. Scofield, eventually finding its way into Bible colleges and seminaries such as Moody and the Dallas theological seminary.

But is it scriptural? Does the Bible teach that Christians will be raptured (caught up, taken out of this world) before the great tribulation? Indeed, there are verses that at first glance might lead one to think so, but a careful study of scriptures within their context proves otherwise. I believe it is vital to a right understanding of truth, that we come with an open mind and heart, without our preconceptions, and see what God says to us through His word.

One of the pre-trib proof texts is found in 1 Thessalonians 4.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, and the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the couds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thess 4:16-17 KJV)

These verses deals with the return of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and the catching away of those who are alive and remain. Those who hold to a pre-trib rapture place this event prior to the seven year tribulation. This is based upon Paul's statement in 1 Thessalonians 5:9, that God has not appointed us into wrath, and Christ's promise in Rev 3:10, to keep faithful Christians from the hour of trial about to come upon the earth.

When God sent the plagues upon the Egyptians, the Israelites were untouched. Except for the tenth plague, there was a distinction made between them. Egypt suffered through the plagues, while the Israelites did not. In the tenth plague, God made provision for the children of Israel to avoid the death angel, and be spared. In like manner, God is not pouring out His wrath on believers during the tribulation, but upon the ungodly. Believers may suffer persecution at the hands of evil men, but they are not suffering God's wrath. Using Lot for an example of God's deliverance, we are told in 2 Peter 2:7-9, that God knows how to rescue the righteous from trials. We pray,  "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (Matt 6:13). These are precious promises to believers, but not proof positive of a pre-trib rapture. While we may face persecution in this world, we can count upon our faithful Father to keep us pure and unspotted, and to bring us safely through. Interestingly, we see Jesus praying not that God would take His disciples out of the world, but that He would keep them from the evil (John 17:15). That alone should cause us to stop and think about this doctrine.

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. John 17:14-15 KJV

Apparently Jesus believed that one did not need to escape this world to be delivered from persecution. Throughout the history of the Church there has been times of severe persecution where countless numbers of Christians have suffered and died for their faith. This is to be expected. There are numerous places in the new testament where we are warned of persecution. Yet again, believers have found God to be more than enough in the hour of trial, facing torture and death firm in the faith. It seems ironic that many today in foreign lands suffer unspeakable horrors, yet boldly stand for Christ, while so many of us in America are content to sit safely in our comfort zones while we wait for the rapture to spare us from suffering.

Jesus made many plain statements concerning His return, the resurrection of the dead, and the gathering of His elect. We will now look at some of these, starting in Matthew 24.

Jesus begins His teaching with the warning, "Take heed that no man deceive you (Matt 24:4). How very important it is indeed that we know the truth, that we are not deceived about something as important as this topic is to our very souls. Jesus warns of false christs, wars, and rumours of wars, kingdoms and nations rising up against one another. He warns of disasters and famines, afflictions and persecution. Deceivers will rise up and deceive many. People will hate and betray one another. Sin will abound, and the love of many will grow cold. The apostle Paul writes of a great falling away prior to Christ's return (2 Thess 2:3). According to Jesus, it is the one who endures to the en
d who will be saved. When the gospel of the kingdom has been preached throughout all the world, the end will come.

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the Holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judea flew into the mountains: let him which is in the household not come down to take any thing out of his house: neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day: for them shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.  Matt 24:15-22 KJV

Jesus now turns to the time of great tribulation beginning with the revealing of the antichrist.  Notice that this time is said to be shortened for the sake of the elect. According to Jesus, there will be Christians in the earth at this time. The argument may be made that these are people who have turned to Christ after the rapture, or the Jewish people on the earth at this time who will be saved during the tribulation. However, was Christ's intended audience tribulation saints, those left behind during the rapture? While His original audience were Jews, was this only meant for them? In Revelation 7:9-17 we read of a great multitude which no man could number, made up of all nations who came out of the great tribulation. According to pre-trib theology, few gentiles will be saved at this time, as God is primarily dealing with Israel. This does not fit with what is stated here in Revelation however. The multitudes mentioned in this passage of scripture were not raptured before the tribulation, but went through it, and were made up of people from all nations.

The apostle Paul is in agreement with Jesus' statement about the revealing of the antichrist,

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together into him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man receive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. 2 Thess 2:1-8 KJV

Paul is saying here that the second coming of Christ, along with our gathering together to Him (the rapture) will not occur until after a great falling away from the faith, and the revealing of the antichrist. Most pre-tribbers believe that the Church is gone before this point. This view is based upon  Paul's statement about the restrainer being taken out of the way. The idea being that the one restraining the antichrist is the Holy Spirit, who will be absent from the earth when the Church is raptured. However, Paul clearly states that the antichrist will be revealed before this, and we have just read the words of Jesus, how after the revelation of the man of sin, a great tribulation will come upon the earth. This is all prior to Christ's return to gather His elect, as we shall see.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matt 24:29-31 KJV

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJV

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a monent, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Cor 15:51-52 KJV

Notice how this is all taking place at one time. The second coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead in Christ, and the rapture of the living saints. Pre-trib theology teaches that this is a two staged event, the rapture and resurrection, followed seven years later by Christ's return. This finds no Biblical support, these three verses actually disprove this theory. We have Jesus return to earth with a shout and the sound of a trumpet. The dead in Christ rise first, and then those who are alive are caught up to meet the Lord in the air. One event, not two. According to Jesus this takes place after the tribulation. This is the rapture, the gathering of the elect that Jesus and Paul are speaking of in these verses. Notice the sound of the trumpet. It is the last trump. There is no more. When the trump sounds it is at the return of Christ. These verses cannot be split up to teach a two stage rapture and second coming.

Read these verses concerning the resurrection,

And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:39-40 KJV

Martha saith into him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. John 11:24 KJV

 There cannot be a resurrection on the last day, and then seven years of tribulation. That would make no sense. If this event was prior to the tribulation, what happens to those who die as martyrs during the tribulation? The Bible speaks of a second resurrection in Rev 20:5, but this is the raising of the wicked dead for judgment, also referred to as the second death. A Christian will not take part in the second death. The Bible tells us that those who take part in the first resurrection are blessed.  When Christ returns for his saints, it will be the one and only time He returns. There will only be one resurrection of the dead in Christ, one rapture, and one second coming. This will take place at the last day, the end of the tribulation, as we have seen in the word of God. There is no concrete Biblical support for a pre-tribulational rapture. Do not be deceived, but be watchful  and alert, lest that day come upon you unawares.
