For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
Hebrews 2:1 NASB
This warning is not given to the unsaved. It is given to those who know Christ, those who are blood bought and redeemed. It is a very real possibility to drift away. We are exhorted to give heed to the word of God. We must pay attention to it and allow it to shape our lives. We must be diligent to put it into practice. It is my belief that a christian does not just get up some day and decide to fall away. It is a drifting away over time, gradually growing comlacent, content with our salvation, comfortable, feeling safe, letting down our guard. We can get careless about obedience, we can get lazy about prayer, and time in the word. We will soon forget the truth and fall into deception.
How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation (verse 3)? We neglect our salvation at our own peril. We live in a world that bombards us with every imaginable temptation. Deception abounds. It is the overcomer, the one who endures to the end (Matt 24:13) that will be saved. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end (Heb 3:14).
The good news is this "Greater is He that is in you, than he who is in the world" (1John 4:4).
To earnestly contend for the faith, that was once for all entrusted to the saints, to promote the full gospel of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself to deliver us from this wicked generation.

A coveting spirit.
We live in a society given to instant gratification. Whatever we desire, we obtain.
We don't always crave what want, we just go get it. Because of this, we don't consider that we may have a problem with covetousness.
Try going without something that you want. Try foregoing a habit. Do you begin to desire that thing? Does it grow into an obsessive desire? We can easily see by this if we have a problem or not. When we do not gratify our desires, we can see how strong they are.
To covet, is to be an idolater. It is a very dangerous thing spiritually. We must be on guard at all times, keeping our eyes on Jesus, who is worthy of our worship.

Pay attention!
For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
Hebrews 2:1 NASB
It is vital that we take God and His word seriously. We live in an age where the truth is compromised. People live as if the Bible is irrevelant, as if what it teaches does not matter in the long run. Pastors and bible teachers present a washed down version of what the Bible really teaches, in an effort to please men instead of God.
Pay attention to the truth! This means that we hold God in a reverent fear! He means what He says. It is important that we hear, and then go and do what He says! It is not enough to know what God says, we must let it have its way in our lives. It must become part of us. If we truly believe in a cause, we will be moved to act on behalf of that cause. If we believe God's word, then we will take it seriously, and live it out.

Christ, the object of our pursuit.
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV.
Many individuals seek God. they seek Him to meet needs, they seek Him to provide things, they seek His forgiveness. Many of these needs are legitimate. In fact we are to bring our needs to God, and trust Him to provide for us. Ample scriptures can be found to encourage us to come to God with our cares and burdens.
However, I believe that far too often we neglect the greatest pursuit of all. We tend to seek our needs. We seek the gift, not the giver. This verse speaks of drawing near to God, seeking Him. We are to believe that He will reward those who seek Him. Our greatest need, and the greatest blessing we can obtain, is the presence of Christ Himself. To walk with Him, and dwell with Him, to live as it were in the very holy of holies itself.
Let's begin to pursue God Himself, not for what He can do for us, but for the sake of knowing Him deeper. That is true relationship!

Christ is Risen!
And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
1 Cor. 15:14 NIV
The resurrection of Jesus has a profound impact upon our lives. Because Jesus is risen from the dead, we cave freedom from the guilt of sin. We can stand before Him on the day of judgement and be declared not guilty. We do not need to fear death. We too will be raised on that day, and will receive new bodies that will not decay.
There is power in this life as well. Because Christ arose, we can walk in newness of life. The power of sin is broken. We can live in victory, we can seek the things above where Christ is. We have been quickened by the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead. We have life on this earth, an abundant life lived in communion with God.
Our broken fellowship with Him is now restored. We who were once aliens to God and His covenant are now brought in and have become His children!
Live like you believe Christ is truly risen!

A new creation.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. the old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV.
In Christ we are made new. In Him we have been re-created. Once we were selfish individuals, caring nothing for God, or others. In Christ this selfish principle has been destroyed, and been replaced by love; love for God, and our fellow man. The individual who once stole, lied, commited adultry, coveted, profaned God, and served god's of his own invention, is now honest, faithful, and worships the God who redeemed him, in spririt and truth.
This is accomplished in all who will come to Christ, and immerse their lives in Him, giving all to Him, so that He might be all in them. The life transformed by Christ is completely changed. The old is gone, the new has come. Regeneration is a total makeover, not merely a cleaned up life.
Are you a new creation? Are you in Christ?

Holiness defined.
Here is a definition of holiness that I thought was quite good.
Holiness is a thing of the heart; it is the purging away of the dross of the soul; it is the renewing of our whole nature so that we are made 'partakers of the Divine nature' (2 Pet. i. 4). It makes 'the tree good.'

Singleness of purpose.
Devotion signifies a life given, or devoted, to God. He, therefore, is the devout man, who lives no longer to his own will, or the way and spirit of the world, but to the sole will of God, who considers God in everything, who serves God in everything, who makes all the parts of his common life parts of piety, by doing everything in the Name of God, and under such rules as are conformable to His glory.

This seems like a lofty ideal, unreachable by most Christians. Indeed we fall far short of this in the Church today. Yet this was normal Christianity for the early Church, This is the standard set forth in the new testament. Whatever we do in word or deed, we are to do in His name, and for His glory. This covers every aspect of life. Eating, drinking, working and resting, our thoughts, our plans all fall under this rule.
It all comes down to our level of commitment to Christ, and the depth of our love for Him. He desires us to love Him with the totality of our being. We are to be consumed by our love for Him. Everything we do flows from love, with His glory as its motive. It is indeed a lofty place, a high calling, that can only be fueled by the fire of the Holy Spirit consuming the sacrifice of our lives. We must die to self, our plans, our wills, and let Him be all.

Want Faith?
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:17 ESV
If you want to build up your faith, get into the word of God. This is where God speaks to us. His word is where we find His promises. Read it with a heart that is willing to receive what it says. Allow it to challenge your preconceived ideas. Believe it and act upon it, you will be transformed.

Finding God's promises.
For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him.
2 Cor 1:20.
It is in Christ where we find all we need for life and godliness. God has given us all we need to become partakers of His divine nature (2Peter 1:3,4). Only in Him can we realize these promises. this is the place of submission and trust, the place of surrender to the will of God. It is the place where we lay down our lives so that He may live. Many seek the promises of God, to no avail. They seek with selfish reasons, they seek while clinging to part of their lives. The soul who has made Christ it's life, a unlimited storehouse is opened. All of God's promises find their yes in Christ, as we live in Him by faith.

Which is easier?
"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'your sins are forgiven'; or to say, 'get up, and pick up your pallet and walk'? But so you know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"- He said to the paralytic," I say to you, get up pick up your pallet and go home."
Mark 2:9-11 NASB.
The scriptures are consistent throughout. God healed then, and is more than willing to heal today. This passage of scripture reveals that when it comes down to crunch time, faith is often superficial. It is not so much the quantity of faith that receives the answer, but the quality. True faith stands the test!

In Christ.
To be in Christ is a theme repeated throughout the writings of Paul the Apostle. In Christ we find life and salvation. It is vital that we understand what it means to be in Christ.
Picture yourself standing next to a lake. You now put one foot in, but you are not in the lake until you are standing in it with both feet. But this is only the beginning. To really be in, you go out into deeper water and dive in, fully submerged. Now you are properly in the lake.
To be in Christ is to be fully submerged in Him. It involves the full surrender of your life to Him. It means He is your life, you live for nothing else but Him ( Col 3:4). Many people add Christ to their lives, they want Him around for what He can do for them. as long as it is convenient. They still retain control over their lives. Such people are deceived. They have no more of Christ as an atheist does. It is all or nothing. We take all of Christ, and He gets all of us. There can be no holding back.
I think baptism illustrates this well. You go down into the water completely, fully submerged, and then are brought up again. We are completely immersed in Christ, and then raised up to newness of life in Him!
This is where we find everything we need, in Christ.

How do we talk about others?
Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother, or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
James 4:11,12 ESV.
It is so easy to talk about others. Even among Christians the temptation is strong to gossip and backbite. We tend to look at others with a judgemental eye, finding out there faults and failures, and then sharing them with others.
James puts it bluntly. If we do this, we are not acting according to the law, that is the law of love. In fact we are actually saying that we are above the law, the law really does not matter! We are actually putting ourselves in the place of God! This is a sobering thought, something to remember next time some one comes with a "tidbit".
Love looks out for the other person, does nothing to harm others, protects, and looks for the good in every situation!

The pattern for the Church.
The teaching, and practice set forth in the New Testament, is the pattern for the Church today. The teachings of Jesus in the gospels, the teachings of the Apostles in the epistles, as well as the actions of the early church in the book of Acts, are what we need to come into alignment with.
The faith has been delivered once for all time to the church. There is no new doctrine. We must be careful that we do not add to biblical revelation. We also must not detract from the standard set forth in scripture. This includes the gifts of the spirit. Many today believe that the gifts have ceased, miracles have ceased etc. This is far from true. The church is to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, doing the works that Christ did when He walked the earth.
Let's get up to the standard!

A means to an end?
"Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seekining me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.
John 6:26,27 ESV.
Jesus had miraculously fed five thousand individuals with two fish, and five loaves of bread. The next day, the people were searching for Jesus, wanting more. They had an encounter with God Himself, but were only interested in what He could give them. He was only a means to an end for them. They cared nothing about knowing Him, loving Him, and serving Him.
Many today have this same attitude. People are seeking God for things: even necessary things. People are encouraged to come to Christ for happiness, a better life, finances, and a host of many other things.
It is true that God will provide. He cares for us and desires the best for us. He encourages us to come to Him with our needs and burdens. However He is not a means for our ends! He is the end! We are called to live for His glory, His plans, His purposes. We come to Him for salvation, not so we can be happy, or bettered, but so we can be reconciled to Him, so we can know Him and fellowship with Him. It is about Him!
Jesus said if we seek His kingdom and righteousness first, that is to make it our consuming priority, He will provide all that we truly need (Matt 6:25-33). We are called to abandon our lives, to live for Him. He is our purpose, not the other way around.

God's firm foundation.
But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity."
2 Timothy 2:19.
We can fool others, and we can fool ourselves, but we cannot fool God. Many call themselves Christians, but yet live for the world. Their lives show little or no change. They still enjoy a sinful lifestyle, and do not desire to change.
God is not fooled. He knows who are His. Those who are His, hate sin with a passion. They love Him with all their heart, and now desire to live lives that please Him.

Faith not sight.
We live in an age where many doctrines abound. For some, truth is whatever they want it to be. There are no absolutes, whatever works, whatever does not offend is truth, for the time being.
Others base their doctrine, or lack thereof, on the lives and experiences of others. They loook at those around them and form their opinions as to what constitutes Christianity, what constitutes sin, how God works in the world today, etc.
The truth is only found in the word of God! Walk by faith, and not by sight!

Watch out for false teachers.
The Bible warns us of false teachers who will come and deceive many. The individuals in this video have a soft appealing message that attracts many, but does nothing but lead them on to a Christless eternity. The sad thing is their books can be found along side of other Christian books in bookstores and mail order services. Instead of standing for the truth, and having nothing to do with false teachers, the "christian book industry" seems to carry whatever sells.
These teachers do away with much of what the Bible teaches on salvation, holiness. hell, judgement, and paint a very distorted image of God. Many teach that we are individual gods. Worship practices from other religions are all incorporated into their teachings, creating a kind of new age religion that teaches all roads lead to heaven. Universalism is a common thread, as well as tolerance and acceptance of all manners of lifestyles no matter how sinful they are.

Neglecting your salvation.
Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
Hebrews 6:7,8 (NIV).
Every spring we till a small piece of ground, and plant a garden. We get out there and pull weeds, hoe, water, fertilize, looking forward to the vegetables that we will enjoy in the fall. It was different this year. We were expecting another baby and it was hard for my wife to get out there like she wanted to. We also got serious about burning wood, and I spent most of my spare time cutting and splitting, trying to get a good jump on the winter.
I still tried to find time to pull a few weeds, hoe a row of potatoes, get the soaker hose out there etc. as the summer went on however, we noticed that the weeds were begining to take over. It does not take long, a few days of neglect and you have a big problem in your garden. By the time it came to dig potatoes, I had to really look to find where my rows were!
We felt bad, but consoled ourselves with the fact that we had some good reasons for not getting the job done right this year.
It is the same with our salvation. the writer of Hebrews warns us about neglecting our salvation (2:1-3). This letter is not written to lost people, warning them not to put off getting saved, it is written to born again Christians who were on the verge of falling away from their faith! Jesus tells us, in the parable of the sower, what the thorns and thistles represent (Matt 13:7,22). The worries of life, and the deceitfulness of riches, like weeds, will choke out and destroy our spiritual life. It may not be a deliberate falling away, something that we do in an instant, but a gradual drifting away, as life's cares and pursuits spring up in the freshly tilled soil of our hearts. A little neglect in the garden leads to failure at harvest time. A little neglect of our spiritual life leads to a failure that will last for an eternity. Life will always throw cares and worries our way, and the world has plenty of things to tempt us with. We need to stand firm in our faith, casting our cares upon Christ. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world. This is how we pull up these spiritual weeds, by faith. No one intends to backslide, no one plans to fall away, it gradually happens before we realize what is going on. We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away (Heb 2:1 NIV). How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? vs 3. Do not neglect your salvation!

Stopping on the brink.
God is present. You can feel it. He is speaking. Conviction begins to fall. Individuals come to the altar, others kneel in the pews. The church is not where God desires it to be, and Christ is now beginning to knock at the door. Perhaps this is it, the revival we have prayed for. We are at the brink again. Will we push through all the way this time? Then the time for announcements comes. It is time for the offering and special music. Everyone gets up,intimacy with God is forgotten for the time being. Church must go on. We stop right at the brink......

God's warnings.
We as parents warn our children. We warn them not to talk to strangers. We warn them to look carefuly before they cross the street. We warn them not to wander off in a busy store. We warn them that there are consequences to their actions. We do this because we love them and are looking out for their well being.
In the same way God warns us. The Bible is filled with warnings. Warnings to the saved as well as the lost. The book of Hebrews contains several warnings written to Christians, exhorting them to stand firm in their faith, exhorting them to press on to maturity, exhorting them to encourage one another. We neglect these warnings at our own peril!
Down through the ages people have tried to explain these passages away, tried to soften them, and tried to make them fit into their theological systems. This is what our children often do with the warnings we give them. They want to do their own thing, so they disregard the warning. God did not place these passages of scripture in our Bible to scare us, or to confuse our theology. He loves us! He desires the best for us! He wants us to be safe so He warns us!
We see countless portions of scripture that encourage us of the saving and keeping power of Christ. One of the ways we are kept, is by being warned. Do not fall into the trap of manipulating scripture to accomodate a theological system,or to feel "safe". Heed the warning, God is protecting you by it!

God's way.
It is not individuals who pray for God's blessings on their efforts who succeed. It is those who seek God, live close enough to Him to hear him, and enter into His work. These are the ones who find success.

Standing in the holy place.
Clean hands and a pure heart are essential for one to prevail with God. God is holy, and requires us to be holy as well, if we are to dwell in His presence. Any sin held on to, will only serve to shut us out of fellowship with God.
Clean hands are the result of a pure heart. A right heart will produce right actions, a wrong heart will produce wrong actions. Many come to God in prayer, with wrong hearts and wrong actions. There is a barrier between them and God that will only be removed when sin is repented of.
A group of men met three nights a week to pray for revival. They would pray well into the early morning hours. One night one of them was impressed to read Psalm 24:3-5, "Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart." This convicted the men and led them to a heart searching and a fresh consecration of themselves to the Lord. This was the beginning of the Hebrides revival that lasted about three years. It was a powerful revival with deep conviction of sin followed by a very real and lasting repentance.
The key thing was the fact that these praying men knew that if they expected God to hear them, they must approach Him in holiness and purity. The same goes for us as well.

Clean hands and a pure heart.
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false, and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
